Conclusions
1. Disturbance of the natural structural bonds in fill of Etilian macroporous loams leads to an increase of its compressibility. The consolidation modulus of deformation of freshly placed fill under flooding conditions is 1.5–2.5 times lower than the modulus of the same such loams in an undisturbed state. The additional settlement of fill under construction conditions related to an increase of water content can be reduced considerably by compacting the fill at a water content not below the optimal.
2. When evaluating the bearing capacity and completeness of the processes of self-packing of fill, in addition to the age, method of placement, and type of soils it is necessary to take into account also its capacity for additional compaction upon an increase of water content and change in the hydrogeological situation.
