Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering Aims and scope

Conclusions

In the construction of underreamed piles, maximum development of radial cracks should be aimed at when forming the lower cavities by the blasting method. This can be achieved both by using special high explosives (pentaerythritol tetranitrate, hexogen, trotyl, etc.) and by reducing the plastic properties of the soil mass (reduction of its water content and other measures). In the latter case the useful effect from the utilization of the free space in the radial cracks can be significantly enhanced, for further increase of the economy in construction work.
