Design of a hanging pile for a vertical load in settling ground

Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

Suspended piles must be designed for bearing capacity in conformity with the theory of the ground's ultimate equilibrium.

  2. 2.

Cohesion is the ground's most important characteristic determining the bearing capacity of piles in settling ground.

  3. 3.

Attention should be directed to the existence of an upper area,a, within which the ground exerts practically no pressure on the foundation or the structure. The value ofa depends on the ground's structural strength and apparently also on conditions of sinking the pile into the ground which manifest themselves in the forming of clearances between the pile and the ground on some part of the length during the driving.

The author is continuing work on the perfection of the computation method and on the possibility of applying it to packed piles.
