Conclusions
-
1.
The heating conditions of the soils in foundation beds of buildings and structures are affected, besides by the boundary conditions, by three basic factors:
-
a)
water content of the soil at the start of freezing;
-
b)
depth and density of the snow cover;
-
c)
design of the foundation and lower story of the building.
-
a)
-
2.
A limiting factor when designating the depth of building foundationsis the depth of soil freezing at the corners facing the prevailing winds, since soil freezing near the wall is less by a factor of 1.5–2.
-
3.
Under Siberian conditions snow is a good insulating material for reducing the freezing depth and temperatures of freezing together of the soil and foundation.

From the Editor: When using the recommendations of Yu. S. Pal'kin it is necessary to remember that the water content near foundations, as experiments show, changes with time. This fact must be taken into account when selecting the values of the coefficients mt.
