Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering Aims and scope

Conclusions

1. The theory of percolation consolidation is applicable to fully compressed water saturated clayey and peaty soils up to the attainment of a degree of consolidation equal to 0.75–0.8.

2. During calculations of consolidation it is necessary to consider the structural stability of compression of silty and peaty soils and the residual interstitial pressure.

3. During settling of fully compressed water saturated clayey soils there exists a logarithmic dependence between the coefficient of filtration and the coefficient of porosity.

The use of vertical sand drains for shortening the course of consolidation of fully compressed water saturated clayey soils of foundations is very effective and is recommended for wide use in structures occupying a large area.
