An elastic dielectric at finite temperatures, fields and deformations

Abstract

On the basis of R. A. Toupin's paper [J. Rat. Mech. Anal.5 (1956), 849] a system consisting of a dielectric, conductors and electric charges firmly connected with material is studied. The heat effects at the reversible processes are also considered. By means of the principle of virtual displacements the equations of equilibrium and field and the boundary conditions are derived for a static case. The four basic thermodynamic potentials are defined as the energy of corresponding systems and are written in the coordinate system which moves continuously with the body, where the relations between their partial derivatives and the corresponding quantities keep their simple form which they have at small deformations and fields. This paper therefore represents an attempt to derive equations which could be used as a basis for thermodynamic theory of higher-order effects in dielectrics.
