Abstract
On the basis of the contrast transfer theory of optical systems, a method for calculating the optimum image plane position at image formation in white light was elaborated by a system having only a chromatic aberration so that in monochromatic light it can be regarded as perfect. The results were applied to image formation with a simple thin converging lens. The influence of the different parameters of this system on the optimum image plane position is studied and it is shown how the position of the optimum image plane also depends on the imaged spatial frequency and thus also on the structure of the imaged object.
