Abstract
The value of the birefringence is the basic optical constant of all birefringent cuts. An exact knowledge of birefringence is necessary primarily for cuts with prescribed path difference, i.e. for delay plates, sensitive plates, compensators, Lyot filters, chain filters etc. When calculating such cuts one usually starts out from the data given in some basic tables [1], [2]. During the more than 10 years of practice in this field, however, partial deviations have appeared which could be explained only by insufficiently exact data.
