Abstract
The paper discusses the proposal for a maser which would provide an emission frequency somewhat higher than the pumping frequency. Basically, this is a mixture of a three-level maser and a two-quantum maser. Four cases of such a maser in three- and four-level systems are analyzed and the probability for the two-photon process is derived using perturbation theory. It follows from a discussion of the theoretical dependences that this type of maser has the greatest hope for realization in gases on electric dipole transitions.
