Antibiotic concentrations in inflammatory and interstitial fluids

Antibiotikakonzentrationen in entzündlichem Sekret und interstitieller Flüssigkeit

Summary

Tiny skin abrasions can be used to provide an experimental source of acute inflammatory exudate in healthy subjects or patients with various diseases. After antibiotic administration such exudates can be collected on sterile filter paper discs and thereby the exudate levels can be assayed. Variations of this ‘skin window’ technique also provide an indication of the interstitial fluid levels of an antibiotic. The importance of such methods is that they indicate the antibiotic levels achieved in vivo during an infection; concomitantly it is possible to measure many aspects of the host responses. Thus antibiotic activities and those of the host's immune system can be compared in an individual patient.
