Summary

A comperative survey is given on the courtship of 25 species of manakins. The facts stated are mostly based on observations made by the author in Brazil since 1939. After a condensed description of the courtships of the different kinds of manakins, the subject is summarized by the following points of view: 1. Analysis of the different elements of manakin's display, the distribution of these elements through the different species and the occurence of some similar elements of behaviour in the Tyrants and Cotingas; 2. Age and sex of the birds participating in the communal displays, general character of courtship of the manakins, and interspecific relations between manakins; 3. Phylogenetic and systematic conclusions.
