Soft mode sound velocity of A 15 compounds in high magnetic fields

  • Published:
Zeitschrift für Physik

Abstract

Sound velocity measurements in strong magnetic fields can be used to obtain information about the shape of the electronic density of states in systems where it is strongly peaked in the vicinity of the Fermi energy. This is shown by comparing the observed soft mode stiffening of V3Si in high fields with theoretical results based on different models for the density of states. Other materials expected to show similar effects, are proposed.

  12. According to the Labbé-Friedel model, using EF/0=35 K (U=0), the relative change of the martensitic transformation temperatureTM due to a magnetic field can be shown to beΔTM/TM≈ −0.17(μBH/TM)2. For a transforming sample with TM=21 K andH=90 kOe this yields ΔTM≈−0.3 K, which compares well with the experimental value of −0.26 °K given in Ref. [3]. See also G.
