Summary
The question, whether the formation of a species characteristic is regulated by specific determinative processes within the cytoplasm, or whether it is brought forth by a specific mode of cell wall formation, is discussed on the base of investigations about cyst differentiation within the cap rays ofAcetabularia cells.
Basis of species specific cyst differentiation was found to be an active rearrangement of the cap ray plasm, resulting in the formation of the definitive plasmatic model of the cyst. These processes presumably are associated with protein synthesis, dependent on secondary nuclei actions. Onlyafler development of the definitive plasmatic form cyst wall is synthesized, being detectable by a distinctive color reaction with zink chloride-iodine reagent. In early stages of cyst development, the formation of normal plasmatic cyst models can be influenced with actinomycin-D or with puromycin, causing the formation of plasmatic forms of altered morphology. On their surfaces specific cyst wall is also deposited. Formation of species characteristics, therefore, is determinated by specific morphogenetic processes which the cytoplasm undergoes, and not by the mode of cell wall formation.
