Conclusions
In an argon atmosphere the wetting angle of aluminosilicate specimens with Steel 35 at 1550°C depends on the phase composition of the specimen, i.e., with a corundum content of 1–7% the wetting angle increases with the percent mullite in the specimen.
Depending on the holding period, the wetting angle of porous corundum specimens may be larger or smaller than that of high-density substrates.
Judging from the magnitude of adhesion, the stability to the chemical action of liquid Steel 35 in an argon atmosphere at a constant temperature (1550°C) should be highest for mullite. However, before recommending mullite refractories for steel-casting an investigation must be carried out of the influence of other factors occurring under production conditions.
