Abstract

Cytological diagnosis of carcinomas as well as of other pancreatic tumors is of high validity. By use of the modified Papanicolaou staining method, the procedure is adaptable for rapid intraoperative diagnosis. In order to obtain representative cell material, we have tried both preoperative endoscopic fluid collection and intraoperative fine needle biopsy. Whereas the first procedure often fails because of its technique, the latter is suitable in all cases. No serious complication arose in the 181 patients studied. In 152 diagnostic-ally proven cases, the cytological result was correct 135 times (88.8%). Forty of 44 resectable malignomas were diagnosed correctly. Consequently, the success rate is remarkably high with small tumors for which the indication for resection should be based on microscopic diagnosis.
