Abstract
Antibiotic prophylaxis should be used a) where the risk of infection is high; b) where bacterial contamination is high; where contamination is infrequent but the consequences of infection are high; and c) where contamination is infrequent but the host is compromised. Careful attention should be given the selection of an appropriate agent for the given circumstance. Timing and route of administration are also important factors.
