Summary
The influence of the trachea on the sound production in song birds is yet quite uncertain. On the one side, a modulating effect is attributed to the trachea similar to the human vocal tract. On the other side, the trachea is considered a matched acoustic system which exerts no influence upon the sound produced. In the present investigation parts of the song of the willow warbler(Phylloscopus trochilus) are analyzed to answer this question. The relation between sound intensity and momentary frequency yields curves which clearly resemble resonance curves of a damped vibrating air column in a tube (Fig. 5, for example). The tube length can be determined from the resonance frequency. It was found to be approximately of the length of the trachea of a song bird. These results favour the assumption that the air oscillations generated by the tympanic membranes are modulated by the trachea which is in agreement with known properties of the voice of song birds.
