Summary

Sisomicin, a new aminoglycoside similar to gentamicin, was administered parenterally to 20 patients who had complicated urinary tract infections. The infecting organisms were Proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, or Enterobacter, previously resistant to other antimicrobial medications. A 95 % cure rate was achieved; one patient responded to a second course of sisomicin, and overall there were no untoward side effects. This new antibiotic, which has the same spectrum and toxicity as gentamicin, appears to have greater efficacy.
