Summary

Castration leads to an increased accumulation of depot fat. Gaschromatographic investigations showed no significant difference in fatty acid composition between intact males and castrates. Thermal conductance of castrates (1.32 J/K·g·h) is 11 % lower than in males (1.44 J/K·g·h). This is due to a better insulation in the castrated quails, mainly caused by the increased deposition of fat. Feathers and claws of castrates become darker. This may be an effect of an increased melanotropin secretion induced by the low testosterone-level.
