Summary

Casual flower visits by birds basically insectivorous in Europe suggest a certain predisposition of different bird species for (the exploitation of flowers) and drinking nectar as food. Israel is within the migration range ofSyvia atricapilla andS. curruca. This birds (among others) could be observed feeding nectar in recently cultivatedEucalyptus-trees, an ornithophilous plant native to Australia and pollinated normally by Meliphagidae. This adopted facultative nectardrinking, entering a new “orphaned” food niche is discussed.
