Summary

A patient developed a paravertebral abscess due to nondiphtheria coryneform bacteria following infected ingrown toenails. Both the causative role of this uncommon pathogen and the unusual origin were established by cultures of tissue from the toes, blood and an aspirate of the paravertebral abscess. The microorganism was tentatively identified as an atypical variant ofArcanobacterium haemolyticum.
