Zusammenfassung
Summary
1. This analysis is based upon the daily captures of songthrushes, which were made during 6 periods of autumn migration on the island of Heligoland.
2. The probability of migratory activity is defined as the likelihood for a bird that is still in the departure area to begin migrating. The expected probability of migratory activity is calculated as a linear regression function of the date.
3. Using multiple linear regression analyses, we attempt to find the weather factors responsible for the daily deviations of the probability of migratory activity from this regression line.
4. By introducing square terms, we have accounted for the fact that the connection between the probability of migratory activity and weather is not necessarily linear.
5. The best prediction of the daily fluctuations of the probability of migratory activity can be made by the wind. Further analysis has shown that songthrushes are most likely to migrate with winds from northeast. The departure areas of the songthrushes being to the northeast, we can assume that on migration songthrushes prefer tailwinds.
Highest correlation coefficients have been obtained by using the development of the wind during the whole night. Therefore, it seems that the best conditions for migration are present when there is a steady airstream from northeast.
Furthermore, there is a negative correlation of the probability of migratory activity with relative humidity, temperature, overcast and rain and a positive correlation with pressure.
