A clinical study of infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

Infection Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

The clinical significance of infections due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in eighty-two patients is assessed. Serious infections occurred. Three patients with postoperative pneumonia died. Wound infections remained localized but some patients had a prolonged stay in hospital. Assessment of treatment with theβ-lactamase resistant penicillins in eight cases showed that clinical failure of treatment resulted, and colonization with methicillin-resistant Staph. aureus was not prevented. The frequency of methicillin-resistant Staph. aureus was not shown to be associated with penicillin usage in our hospitals.
