Gonadenentwicklung beim Wellensittich,Melopsittacus undulatus unter verschiedenen Lichtbedingungen

Gonadal development in the budgerigar, under various light regimes

Summary

In domesticated strains of budgerigars the testicular maturation has been investigated under conditions of long and short daily photoperiods.

At the age of 3 1/2 to 4 months, first mature sperms appear. In the short-day-group, the trend of a weak retardation seems to be visible.

The small individual variability in the young rapidly increases in the older birds.

No general capacity for a photoperiodic response could be proved in the males.

The results are discussed and compared with corresponding data of other species.
