Summary
The quantitative investigation of a population of breeding birds by the method of mapping singing ♂ is, with regard to statistics, a problem of cluster analysis. Accumulated observations of territorial behaviour are amalgamated in clusters under the condition that all observations within every cluster refer to different controls. This interpretation work is made easier and more objective if the territories are demarcated automatically. As the available computer programs of cluster analysis do not fulfil the condition mentioned above, a new program was made which is specifically intended for investigations of the breeding density of birds. The working method of the program is described. An example with empirical data shows which possibilities of utilization are offered by the program. By means of the automatic demarcation of territories the methods of bird census work can be investigated even by experiments which would take extremely much time without a computer.
