Summary

During incubation Common Terns of a colony on the Wadden Sea island Minsener Oldeoog spent about 42 % of the daylight hours foraging and 45 % attending the nest. During brooding, however, the daily amount of time for foraging varied between the studied Common Terns from 23 to 75 % of daylight hours, presumably owing to distinct parental roles in brood care. The parents made more foraging flights (4.9) during brooding than during incubation (3.7). At the same time they shortened the flight duration (from 114 to 52 min, median values in 1989). By this means the terns can increase the feeding rate of their chicks.
