Summary
A survey is given of the recently introduced oral cephalosporin cefadroxil. The spectrum of activity, human pharmacology and indications of the antibiotic are discussed. Cefadroxil, similar to the other oral cephalosporins with respect to antibacterial properties, differs from the existing oral cephalosporins by its prolonged bioavailability which is not affected when the drug is taken with food. The penetration into body fluids and tissue has been thoroughly investigated. Extensive clinical trials have shown that cefadroxil administered twice daily displays a high degree of efficacy and is well-tolerated in children and adults.
