Summary
Anaerobic bacteria were found in six of 15 women who were suffering from either a severe post-operative, in some cases ascending, infection following gynaecological surgery or from severe post-partum endometritis. All infections were treated successfully with cefoxitin 3 × 2 g/die administered in a rapid infusion. No side-effects were seen. The risk of infection of gynaecological surgical wounds with anaerobes should be taken into account more often when making a diagnosis.
