Summary

In 81 patients with adnexitis, simultaneously obtained cervical smears and secretion from the cul-de-sac were examined bacteriologically. The most common pathogens found were anaerobes and enterobacteria. Organisms isolated from the culde-sac corresponded with those found in the cervix in only 50% of the cases. On the basis of their resistance quota, chloramphenicol, carbenicillin, cefoxitin and mezlocillin are the antibiotics of choice in the treatment of adnexitis.
