Summary
The antibacterial efficacy of cefoxitin on a penicllinase-producingStaphylococcus aureus strain was investigated by means of microcalorimetry and the continuous measurement of turbidity. With a concentration of 1 mcg/ml of medium or more cefoxitin intervenes in the microcalometrically measurable cell metabolism, and after acting for a longer period of time causes bacteriolysis, the intensity of which increases with the increase in concentration. The microcalorimetric results show that cefoxitin maximally develops the blocking effect on the metabolism with bacteriolysis within a very small field of ineffective concentrations. The changes in the microcalorimetry curves of theStaphylococcus aureus strain caused by cefoxitin are very similar to those obtained with penicillin derivatives.
