Summary
Using the agar dilution test, 33 strains belonging to the familyActinomycetaceae and 90 differentNocardia strains were tested for their sensitivity to cefoxitin and, as a comparison, several new cephalosporins. The strains used in the study included both clinical isolates and strains cultured from the environment or obtained from culture collections. AllActinomycetaceae tested(Actinomyces israelii, Actinomyces naeslundii, Actinomyces viscosus, Actinomyces odontolyticus, Actinomyces bovis, Arachnia propionica, Bacterionema matruchotii, Rothia dentocariosa) showed good susceptibility to cefoxitin, cefuroxime, cefamandole, cefazolin, cephalothin, cephradine, cephalexin and cephacetrile, with MIC values ranging from 0.2 to 12.5 µg/ml. PathogenicNocardiae (Nocardia asteroides, Nocardia brasiliensis, Nocardia caviae), however, were predominantly resistant with MICs of 50 µg/ml or more. Only a few strains of theN. asteroides complex showed inhibition of growth at concentrations between 3.13 and 25 µg/ml. On the basis of these results, the inclusion of cefoxitin amongst the standard drugs in the treatment of actinomycosis is discussed. In nocardiosis and actinomycetoma the sulfonamides and possibly fusidic acid remain the drugs of choice.
