Summary
Thirty-eight children ranging in age from one month to 13 years and suffering from serious bacterial infections, predominantly pneumonia, were treated with cefotaxime. The average daily dosis was 100 mg/kg body weight, administered at 12-hour intervals. Over 90% of the patients were clinically completely cured. The clinical symptoms disappeared within a few days following treatment. The antibiotic was well tolerated. Only in one case was the therapy discontinued due to an allergic exanthema. The measurements of the blood levels carried out on five infants showed that concentrations remain within therapeutic range for more than eight hours. Due to its excellent antibiotic activity, its broad-spectrum and good tolerance, cefotaxime is particularly suited for the treatment of childhood infections. At present, there is no antibiotic available which even approaches the effectiveness of cefotaxime, especially for the treatment of a serious case of pneumonia.
