Summary
The antibacterial activity of cefotaxime was examined in both the serial dilution test and the agar diffusion test using a total of 2547 freshly isolated gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial strains. For comparison, cefamandole, cefuroxime, cefoxitin, cefazolin and cefotaxime were tested at the same time. Cefotaxime was found to be the most active agent againstEnterobacteriaceae; its efficacy surpassed that of all other drugs tested. Organisms which had hitherto been considered resistant or which were insufficiently inhibited by other cephalosporins were inhibited effectively by cefotaxime. Cefotaxime was entirely effective against indole-positiveProteus species,Serratia marcescens andCitrobacter freundii and also somePseudomonas strains. The high degree of susceptibility ofStreptococcus faecalis found in the agar diffusion test could not be demonstrated in the serial dilution test. All drugs tested were active against staphylococci. Cefotaxime also gave the best results of all the cephalosporins tested when tested against 237 gentamicin-resistant strains.
