Summary
7973 bacterial strains obtained in routine diagnostics were studied in order to determine their sensitivity to cefotaxime, a newly developed antibiotic. Compared to the cephalosporins in use up until now, cefotaxime displayed an enlarged spectrum of effectiveness to include half of thePseudomonas aeruginosa strains and increased antibacterial activity against many species. Resistance varied for different fields of medicine. The highest resistance quotes were found in the surgical intensive care unit.
