Summary
nonsporeforming anaerobes are often found in surgical and nonsurgical infections of the genital organs. A new statistical study on anaerobes in gynecological and obstetrical infections is discussed. In patients with vaginitis, adnexitis, infected and septic abortion, infections of the amniotic fluid, postoperative infections, and the so-called “third-day surgical fever”, most pathogens found belonged to the Bacteroides genus, in addition to some other facultative anaerobes. The significance of anaerobes in mixed infections and their pathophysiology are discussed. In view of the high incidence of anaerobes in gynecological and obstetrical infections, more frequent use of antibiotics which are active against Bacteroides organisms, such as clindamycin, lincomycin, metronidazol, chloramphenicol and the tetracyclines, possibly in combination with other antibiotics, is urged.
