Summary
A one-year retrospective review was conducted to determine the spectrum and the recovery rate of infection with Group B streptococci (GBS) in infants and children. GBS were found in 94 children, 39% of them below one month of age, who presented with clinical infection. Urinary tract infection was diagnosed in 20 of these children (6 were younger than one month and 17 were females). Twenty-three patients had bacteremia (22 younger than one year and 14 younger than one month), four presented with septic arthritis, and three with meningitis. GBS were also recovered from 14 patients with pharyngitis, six with infected wounds, and three with burns. Five newborns (13.5% of the newborns with GBS) expired; three had perinatal pneumonia, and two had meningitis. The organism was also recovered from 84 females (aged from 5 to 18 years), 73 of whom attended the venereal disease clinic.
