Radioactive iron kinetics in blood donors

  • Published:
Blut Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

In 15 blood and plasma donors kinetics of radioactive iron was determined.

Decreased body iron content was found in most [11] subjects, in two of them it was associated with reduction in the mean survival time of erythrocytes. Iron deficiency was greatest in the group of donors with a history of multiple blood donations during many years.

Anaemia was not found in any case and 24-hour synthesis of haemoglobin was normal in all donors; in 3 cases it was even raised.
