The in-vitro inhibition of erythrocyte sickling by biuret

Summary

Biuret which is a known contaminant of urea, inhibits the sickling of erythrocytes in vitro in both whole blood and in isolated red blood corpuscles. The effect occurs at much lower concentrations than with urea, thus suggesting that biuret by itself might be useful in preventing sickling and might possibly contribute to the effect of urea.

Zusammenfassung

Biuret, ein bekannter Begleitstoff von Harnstoff, verhindert die Sichelveränderung von Erythrozyten in vitro nicht nur im Blut, sondern auch in isolierten Erythrozyten. Diese Wirkung geschieht mit viel niedrigeren Konzentrationen als mit Urea, andeutend, daß Biuret an sich in der Verhinderung von Sichelveränderung von Erythrozyten angewendet werden könnte, und möglicherweise zu dieser Wirkung von Urea beitragen könnte.
