Summary
The concentration of alkaline leukocyte phosphatase (ALP) has been investigated on male as well as on ovariectomized and hysterectomized female rats, after application of estradiol benzoate alone, and in combination with progesterone. The activity of ALP was determined on blood films with the Azocoupling method ofMerker modified afterBauer-Sic.
The female as well as the male rats showed a significant increase in the ALP after application of estradiol benzoate. The application of estradiol benzoate in combination with progesterone effected no increase in activity in male rats, and only a slight increase in female rats. The results demonstrate that estradiol benzoate has a direct or indirect effect on the reaction of the ALP, whereby it is not necessary that the hormone passes through the uterus. Progesterone seems to check the increase of ALP-activity by means of an anti-estrogen-effect. It is discussed, whether this reaction depends on the dosage or occurs in physiologic processes too.
