Summary
The main principles of the various quantitative emission spectroscopic methods are mentioned briefly. A tabular summary is given of the publications dealing with the determination of calcium alone or together with other elements. In this, those points are considered which are important for the selection of a method in any particular case.
The essential advantages and disadvantages, due to the various sources of excitation, are collected in tabular form. There is no method which would be equally suitable for all purposes.
Since the flame photometric methods are rapid, relatively simple, cheap, and accurate, they have been employed up to now to a greater extent than the more complicated methods. A table gives the methodical publications on this subject, grouped according to the various principles which underly the apparatus. The important studies of the determination of potassium and sodium are also included, since they deal particularly with manipulation and sources of error.
