Abstract

A simple model of the Antarctic Ocean has been built in order to study the dynamical effects of transverse ridges on the circumpolar oceanic flow. By covering a wide range of model shapes and sizes and by varying the rotation rates of both the fluid container and the plate that drives the interior flow, we have uncovered certain dimensionless parameters that appear to govern the basic flow patterns and volume flux. The effect of combining several topographic features is also explored in a preliminary experiment.

It is with the greatest pleasure that I dedicate this paper to Professor Nicholas Rott on the occasion of his 60th birthday. As a much admired colleague and friend he has been a source of inspiration for many years and I hope to be able to celebrate in similar fashion in coming decades.
