Homogene Randbedingungen sind längs der Kanteny=±1 undx=a (a≫1) eines Rechtecks vorgeschrieben, inhomogene längs der Kantex=0. Zur Lösung der Gleichung∇ 4 Φ=0, und besonders zur Bestimmung ihres Verhaltens in der Nähe vonx=0, wird von einer Minimisierung des Energieintegrals
ausgegangen. Wenn Φ(x, y) durch∑ A n Φ n =∑ A n f n(y)g n (x) approximiert wird, wo die (von vornherein gewählten)f n(y) orthogonal sind und die Randbedingungen any=±1 erfüllen, so ist die Funktionenscharf′ n(y) und die Funktionenscharf¨' n(y) nahezu orthogonal, und das Integral vereinfacht sich zu
Nachdem übery integriert wird, kann man die Funktioneng n(x) als Lösungen einer einfachen Euler-Gleichung erhalten; die KoeffizientenA n können mittels der Fourier-Entwicklungs-Formel bestimmt werden, und das Problem ist gelöst. In dem elastischen Endproblem des Zylinders kann man das IntegralU durch Einführung geeigneter ProduktfunktionenΦ n =F n (v)G n (z) in gleicher Weise vereinfachen; jedoch findet man, dassF n(r) sich nicht in der üblichen Weise orthogonalisieren lässt; man benutzt zur Orthogonalisierung eine Verallgemeinerung der Idee des Rayleighschen Quotienten.
