Summary

The results of the measurements published in the first part of this report are compared to the existant attempts at explanation of the ice nucleability of substances. Of these only the interpretation of the nucleability of supercooled clouds proposed byWeyl can, somewhat extended, be deemed to fit actual observations. It is found in the case of 2-atomic seeding substances that one of the elements (the one on the left-hand side of the periodic system) must be remarkably less polarizable than the partner (on the right-hand side of the periodic system). Another characteristic property of the seeding substances found to be active is their non-solubility in water. The forces responsible for the nucleability of the substances are those which also determine the structure of the surface of the seeding particles and of the water droplets.
