Abstract
The paper deals with the behaviour of alpha particles and protons in the solar wind plasma near the Earth's bow shock. It is based on the data from the BIFRAM instrument onboard the PROGNOZ-10 satellite. The paper contains also the description of a sufficiently accurate method for macroscopic plasma parameters calculation, taking into account angular and energetic characteristics of the spectrometer used. It is shown that the actual spectrometer characteristics are indispensable, namely for a reliable evaluation of mutual ratios of velocities and temperatures for individual mass components in the solar wind. Characteristic parameters of alpha particles and proton flows, as computed by this method, show that in the Earth's bow shock vicinity the relaxation processes differ considerably for each kind of particles.
