Experimental analysis of stress waves in beam-like samples with phase stabilized interferometers

Summary

A technique is presented for measuring surface motions ranging in amplitude from 1 to 60 Å, with the aid of a phase-stabilized linear Michelson interferometer. Finite trains of sinusoidal stress waves with amplitudes in this range and frequencies between 0.5 kHz and 0.5 MHz are generated by means of a piezoelectric transducer attached to one end of a bar. It is shown how the displacement recordings may be used to visualize the wave, measure its phase velocity and discriminate between flexural and axial wave motions. The dispersion curves obtained for both flexural and axial waves in a Plexiglas bar and in a beam-like bone sample from a human femur agree with theoretical predictions based on classical beam theory.

Zusammenfassung

Es wird eine Methode zur Messung von Oberflächenbewegungen mit Amplituden im Bereich 1 bis 60 Å beschrieben, bei der ein phasenstabilisiertes Michelson Interferometer zur Anwendung gelangt. Mit Hilfe eines piezoelektrischen Elementes werden am Ende eines Stabes Spannungsperturbationen induziert in der Form endlicher Züge von sinusförmigen Wellen mit Frequenzen zwischen 0.5 kHz und 0.5 MHz. Durch geeignete Aufzeichnungen der Oberflächenbewegungen lassen sich Biege- und Axialwellen unterscheiden und die zugehörigen Phasengeschwindigkeiten quantifizieren. Die resultierenden Dispersionskurven für Plexiglasstäbe und entsprechenden Proben aus menschlichen Oberschenkelknochen stimmen mit den theoretischen Dispersionskurven der klassischen Balkentheorie überein.
