Summary

The nonlinear damping characteristicD(v) of a self-sustained system is replaced by two piece-wise linear characteristics. The integral curves calculated with their help bound the integral curve corresponding to the nonlinear damping characteristic. The method may be used for the determination of motion and velocity time history, integral curves, limit cycles and amplitude succession. The stability and period of limit cycles may also be determined. The method is used for studying oscillations due to dry friction.
