Summary

The heating and the expansion of a laser-produced plasma sphere in vacuum environment is investigated under the assumption of a sinusoidal energy absorption rate. Optimum conditions for fusion yield are formulated. The minimum laser pulse strength is determined. It is shown that this minimum energy requirement is still larger by many orders of magnitude than the values attainable to-day. The appropriate laser pulse length lies in the nanoseconds range.
