Summary
An idealized shock wave experiment is considered in which a mixture of diatomic molecules (X 2≡H2, O2) highly diluted in Ar (X 2/Ar≪1) is heated instantaneously to high temperatures. The corresponding master equation is solved numerically to determine during the relaxation process the time dependence of the population in the vibrational levels, the dissociation rate, and the rate coefficient. All possible transitions are included to show the influence of multiple quantum transitions in contrast to single quantum transitions. In addition, an estimate is made of the influence of the equilibrium rotational energy on the reaction rate coefficient.
