Tunneling of screw dislocations in α-Fe

Abstract

A model of tunneling of 1/2 [111] screw dislocations in b.c.c. metals from sessile to glissile core configurations described by dislocation splittings is proposed and numerical estimates for α-Fe are derived. The critical shear stress of the order of 50 kp/mm2 should be temperature independent up to 8 K.
