The treatment of juvenile general paralysis

Conclusions

In conclusion we may say that the treatment of choice in juvenile general paralysis is malaria or tryparsamide. Because of the less complicated procedures involved, tryparsamide is probably the more applicable of the two.

This study, if it shows nothing else, definitely indicates the importance of early diagnosis if treatment is to be effective. We would urge that a spinal fluid examination be made on all children with congenital syphilis and on every child who is mentally retarded or presents one or antother form of psychopathology when there is any indication, either in the child itself or in the family, of a syphilitic infection.

We advocate malaria or tryparsamide therapy for any child with a positive spinal fluid serology, even though neurological signs and mental symptoms of general paralysis are absent.
